Der im Abstract angegebene englische Titel lautet: "The development of the German picaresque novel: A theme analysis". -- "As we investigate the picaresque novels of Albertinus, Grimmelshausen, and Beer we find, in opposition to the highly moralistic Albertinus, with Grimmelshausen and especially Beer a strong development toward emancipation from the rigid, religious prejudices of the Counter Reformation" (S. 4263 A).

Purdy wendet sich in seinem Aufsatz dezidiert gegen die Feststellung von Lawrence J. Mills (One Soul in Bodies Twain. Bloomington, 1937), das antike Freundschaftsideal habe kaum Eingang in die mittelalterliche englische Literatur gefunden: "The many indications of the existence of a classical friendship motif in the English literature of the Middle Ages suggests that Professor Mills's conclusions on the rarity of the motif may have been based on insufficient evidence. The friendship theme appears to be something of a commonplace in the Middle Ages, and, aside from the Christian attempts to adapt the motif to theology, exists in a state little different from its first appearence in Plato" (S. 140). - Purdy untersucht zunächst das antike Freundschaftsideal (Platon, Aristoteles) und beschäftigt sich dann mit der Freundschaftsmotivik in einschlägigen mittelenglischen Werken.
