"The period from 1789 to 1848 in France represents the golden age of French gastronomy, the apex of interest in and consciousness of food. The July Monarchy (1830-48) coincided with the supremacy of bourgeois culture and values, the rise of the novel of manners, the growing consciousness among the Romantics of the artist's social mission, and the Christian Socialist Movement. This book is an examination of the alliance between food and literature epitomized in certain novels of the period. - Professor Brown studies the same theme of food and eating in Balzac, Sand, Sue, Hugo and Flaubert, examining the meal both as primary sign-function and as mimesis. His approach may be broadly described as semiotic, though not in the sense of a formal semiotic enquiry; it is his aim to uncover the 'semiotic texture' of fictional meals and their range of meanings rather than their formal properties or relations. - He attempts to explain why this period in France witnessed a momentuos surge in the number of fictional dining episodes, to relate the alimentary discourse in the fiction of this era to the prevailing bourgeois ideology, and to demonstrate how fictional meals function as cultural and narrative signs" (Vorbemerkung, S. I). -- Neben den genannten Werken werden weitere Titel kurz angesprochen.
