- "It is my intention to take a modest step toward a better comprehension of the real child by proposing a phenomenological description of his fictional counterpart. [...] The model of the child constructed and dissected by scientific discourse is an artificial one, less convincing in reality than is its literary counterpart. It is for this reason and in order to avoid the unnecessary confusion endemic to attempts to bring together categories as incompatible as those of aesthetics and of the social sciences, that I exclude from this study the findings of historians, sociologists, psychologists, and philosophers of education and limit myself strictly to literary manifestations of childhood" (Introduction, S. 3 bzw. 14). -- Die Studie hat Überblickscharakter; die herangezogenen Autoren und Werke sind auf den Seiten 214-246 verzeichnet.
