- "My purpose in the present volume [...] is to go back in every instance to primary sources and to examine all treatments of Milton's theme in all languages for their intrinsic interest and merit. While a discussion of source relationships is not entirely omitted, the concern of the volume is with analogues. - In Part I of the book, five pre-Miltonic works are given, in whole or in part, for significant comparison with 'Samson Agonistes' [...]. In the Descriptive Catalogue that follows as Part II will be found brief comments on the significance of hundred or so analogues, both to Miltonists and to the gereral reader" (Preface, S. VI). -- Die im zweiten Teil angeführten Texte umfassen den Zeitraum von ca. 1200 v. Chr. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert.
