The 'Klagelied': A study of the German secular song of complaint and protest, 1450-1650. Diss. Urbana: University of Illinois, 1936. [Auszug: Urbana, Illinois, 1936].
Schmitt, S. 174.
"This study is limited to an investigation of one group of the secular 'Klagelieder'. All songs of a purely religious nature, such as 'geistliche Lieder', hymns, and poems or songs of theological controversy are, therefore, not treated. Other forms excluded for various reasons include the longer and more mechanical 'Meisterlieder', historical and political songs, 'Zeitungen', 'Historien' and 'erbärmliche Geschichten', the more artificial 'Gesellschaftslieder', the short 'Sprüche' [...], 'Spruchgedichte' and other non-stanza verse forms, and finally 'Liebesklagen' [...]. The present study is thus concerned with secular songs in stanza form, possessing lyric, personal qualities and expressing discontent with social conditions" (S. 3).
