Der Begriff 'Wertbestätigung' entspricht dem im Englischen mit 'assertion of values' Gemeinten. -- "The aim of the present study is to attempt a concentrated examination of the expression which Arnold gave to his conflicting attitudes towards life and the human situation in his verse from 'The Strayed Reveller, and other poems' up to and including the edition of 1853: on the one hand sadness and criticism (whether of life in general or of his own age); on the other the assertion of certain values" (Introduction, S. 10). -- Die oben genannten Themen werden in den zwei Hauptkapiteln der Untersuchung in zahlreiche konkretere motivliche Einheiten (etwa: 'necessity', 'man as a prisoner', 'gentleness' oder 'freedom from passion') aufgegliedert. Die mehr als 40 behandelten Gedichte werden in einem Index aufgelistet (S. 76).
