The hero and his opponent in the heroic tragedy from Gottsched to Lessing. Diss. New Haven: Yale University, Connecticut, 1955. [Auszug: Dissertation Abstracts International, 31 (1970/71), S. 5348 A].
Schmitt, S. 134.
"Throughout the Rationalist period, most literature serves an educational purpose; as the years pass by, however, an increasing amount of attention is focused on its purely artistic merits. This change is most clearly reflected in the leading form of dramatic entertainment, the heroic tragedy, both in regard to character development and the interpretation of the tragic conflict. In the first half of the century, with art under the domination of philosophy and ethics, the tragic hero represents the era's moral ideal, while his opponent personifies the forces of evil and immorality [...]. By the middle of the century, the impersonal Wolff-Gottschedian system has been sufficiently modified to admit consideration of the individual personality, just as art has been freed from its didactic yoke and has assumed an importance of its own" (5348 A).
