"This study investigates not only the volkmotif as such, but places it in a broader context. Along with basic insights into the significance of the horse in Old-german times, older legends and documents such as the Eddic poem and the second 'Merseburger Zauberspruch', insights are given into literary manifestations of the volkmotif. Most rewarding, however, was an investigation of the tradition of the horse as a holy-demonic animal, as it is revealed mainly in the literature of the last 200 years. Most documents fall into these last two centuries due to the interest which the German romantics aroused for the Germanic past" (Abstract, S. 2654 A).
