Der Verfasser unterscheidet in seiner überblicksartigen Arbeit zwischen den folgenden 'Seemanns-Typen': "the noble pirate, polite and bloodthirsty, the swearing boatswain, blunt and brave, the humours captain, thoroughly despicable, the plain dealer, misanthropic and honest, the merchant skipper, pious and practical, and the heart of oak, rough and loyal" (S. 202f.). Ein angehängter Index (S. 231-241) bietet die Möglichkeit, diese Typen einzelnen literarischen Werken zuzuordnen. Zudem werden hier Autoren, Werke und die wichtigsten Inhaltsnennungen verzeichnet.

Ziolkowski stellt zusammenfassend fest: "Within the sphere of twentieth-century Russian culture, [bird imagery, avian metaphors and comparisons] offer particularly rich possibilities for creative and emotive criticism of society. The remarkable number of wounded birds who have appeared in recent Russian fictional works and memoirs suggests that this is a major motif in the arsenal of what has been called 'the literature of moral opposition' and doubtless one which has not yet been exhausted" (S. 119f.).
