"Symbolic dreams of future renown in Old Islandic literature". Mosaic, 4 (1970/71), S. 51-73.
Frenzel, Motive, S. 830
"From its earliest beginnings until the present day Icelandic literature has been remarkably rich in symbolic dreams and visions. [...] As we would expect in a literature predominantly tragic in spirit, the vast majority of dreams in Old Icelandic literature are sinister, foreboding adversity and disaster. Among the relatively few dreams prophetic of good fortune, the most intriguing are those which presage the future renown of an individual who is usually, but not always, still unborn at the time when the prodigy appears. Somewhat similar in their symbolism to revelations of future power and prestige are dreams which foretell coming marriages, and a number af these will be considered here even though they usually forebode grief and misfortune or at best a modicum of happiness alloyed with sorrow and sadness. Such dreams are fascinating not only for the variaty of their imagery and the oft-times ironic sophistication of their interpretations, but also because of the plethora of analogues in ancient and medieval literature and a corresponding paucity of parallels in Scandinavian folklore" (S. 51f.).
