The regional novel is the national novel carried to one degree further of subdivision; it is a novel which, concentrating on a particular part, a particular region, of a nation, depicts the life of that region in such a way that the reader is conscious of the characteristics which are unique to that region and differentiate it from others in the common motherland. If any nation, then, were completely homogeneous, not at all diverse, regional novels could not arise within her literature. But where within the limits of a national culture there is a considerable diversity, a considerable variety corresponding to geographical divisions, of patterns of life, in such nation there exists considerable material for regional novels[...]. English literature is extremely rich in regional novels" (S. 7).

-- "The aim of the present study is to attempt a concentrated examination of the expression which Arnold gave to his conflicting attitudes towards life and the human situation in his verse from 'The Strayed Reveller, and other poems' up to and including the edition of 1853: on the one hand sadness and criticism (whether of life in general or of his own age); on the other the assertion of certain values" (Introduction, S. 10).

Poststrukturalistisch ausgerichtete Arbeit: "My aim is not to furnish a final causal explanation as to why the 'femme fatale' occurred as a cultural phenomenon of the 'fin-de-siècle'; nor to close these texts, but to investigate channels of interaction between literature and ideology and to reveal the multiplicity of discourses mobilised to speak about sex and about the sexual woman in this period. The process of deconstructing or disentangling a fabricated representation such as the 'femme fatale' is a politically important one. [...] This book will attempt to disentangle a few particular instances of the fabrication of the 'femme fatale' and, by doing so, suggest the existence of a larger whole, a cultural pattern from which the 'femme fatale' is textured" (Preface, S. XIf. und XIV). - Weitere Autoren und Werke werden genannt.
