- "'Literature and Film: An Annotated Bibliography, 1909-1977' lists and annotates all important books and articles published in North America and Great Britain having to do with the special relationship between films and works of literature. - For most people, the relationship between literature and film is difficult to define. For the purposes of this bibliography three general categories of works have been included. The first category consists of items touching on the process of adapting a work of literature, whether play, novel, short story or even poem, to the screen. This category includes references to films which may be loosely based on their literary source as well as the most meticulous efforts of adaption of literary works to film. In the second category are more general discussions of the similarities and differences between film and literary genres, studies of the influences of other arts on the film, and interviews with directors, screenwriters, novelists, playwrights, actors and others who have had experience or some other interest in the relationship of literature to film. The third category includes references to the teaching of the subject of literature and film in high school, college and graduate classrooms" (Preface, S. IX).
