Price bietet einen umfangreichen (durch Textbeispiele und Illustrationen sehr anschaulichen) Überblick über den 'Inkle und Yariko-Stoff' von seinen Anfängen (Richard Ligons Reisebericht "A True and Exact History of the Island of Barbados", 1657) bis ins beginnende 19. Jahrhundert. In England und Deutschland (einschließlich der Schweiz) war der Stoff außerordentlich populär ("a favorite theme in turn for rationalism, sentimentalism, and then, alas, for authors who speculated on the desire of the people for light entertainment" [S. 2]); in Frankreich war das Interesse ebenfalls groß, doch "the fate of Inkle and Yarico was taken less seriously there and never became to such a degree common lore" (S. 3). - In dem sehr informativen Anhang finden sich eine Chronologie und Bibliographie der erfaßten Texte sowie ein sehr hilfreicher Personen-Index.
