Williams behandelt schwerpunktmäßig die frühen literarischen Belege zu der Legende vom behaarten Anachoreten: "In this investigation the attempt has been made to show that the German (and other) late medieval legends of the anchorite who becames hairy like a beast during a period of solitary penance after succumbing to temptation by a woman, have affinities with old Oriental traditions, both pagan and Christian" (S. 116). Williams Untersuchung: The German legends of the hairy anchorite. Illinois Studies in Language and Literature, 18:1,2. Urbana, Illinois, 1935.
