"This study traces the use of the ruins motif as an artistic device from Du Bellay's 'Antiquitez de Rome' to the romantic period. [...] Of special interest to literary artists were the ruins of Roman architecture. Their portrayal has developed in three directions. First, originating with Du Bellay, the ruins were interpreted as a symbol for man's life and fate. Second, arising as part of eighteenth century aesthetics, the picturesque aspect began to dominate the motif. Third, the ruins motif was integrated into the literary structure of a creative work. This development began with Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's 'Paul et Virginie', was continued by Chateaubriand in 'René' and Madame de Stael in 'Corinne', and reached its culmination in the creative works of the romantics. Although each century in French literature stressed different elements, the three developments always occur in some form" (a.a.O.).
